Wine and Woot!

picture-10

Deal of the day website, Woot! finds itself in the business of wine.

It would appear I am a bit “late to the game” on this one. That’s because I am. As far as my highly informed sources can tell (a.k.a. me on a Friday night with a box of Cheezits), sometime late last year Woot.com released a little sibling: Wine.Woot!

Yes yes, I know what you’re saying, the exclamation point (or ‘mark’ for the rest of the world) was coined, used, invented, and trademarked by Yahoo! way back when. Well, whatever, Woot! seems to be pulling it off.

If you never order wine from the internet, at least head on over to their site and read the FAQs page called What is Wine.Woot, it’s relatively hysterical and hysterically relevant.picture-12

BBC Will Translate Your Wine

What is the food equivalent of your glass of wine? A hamburger, cheeseburger, happy meal? The Dr. Vino blog reports on a BBC page that will translate your glasses of wine (or any alcohol) into food equivalents.

Fruit Crate Art

A nice site where you can find fruit crate art. Pictured here is the FINGER LAKE GRAPES Niagara, E.R. Underwood, Middlesex, N.Y., Shippers of Grapes in carlots, wine or “Table Grapes”; Shows three different heritage grape varieties.

Saddles for REAL MEN!

Saddles for REAL MEN!: “Are you a girly-man, riding a ‘unisex’ bicycle saddle,
or are you ready for a Real MAN Saddle?”

Spittoon – wine drink and food.

Not an extremely well-designed site, Spitoon.biz shines in its subtitle. “We spit so you can swallow.” If only the rest of the site were done with as much wit.

Wine Pronunciation: Cheat Sheet

Now here is a great cheat sheet, print this one out and keep it in your purse or on your iPhone. Better yet, memorize these wine pronunciations. I, for one, was incorrect in the way I said Meritage for years until my lovely wife corrected me one day.

Bicycles and Wines: Wine Bike Photo of the Week

Taken in front of an historic home in Rome, this photo captures the true spirit of anti-doping. In fact, wine might just be the most anti of all anti-doping crusades in the bicycling world. I love it. Called “Antidoping at Critical Mass”, this photo gets me in a few places: one, I love yellow bicycles, two, I always try to jam anything I can into a water-bottle cage, three, when you zoom in on the wine bottle you can see two people hanging out in the reflection, and four, I LOVE yellow bicycles. Thanks for this one, corscri!

Bicycles and Wines: Photo of the Week

Earlier today I was perusing the local not-so “dumb friends league” site for a potential friend. I found a great Australian Shepherd mix that we would probably name “Campy.” You see, we have a kitty-cat named Shimano — who we call “Shimmy,” and therefore I can only see (or rather, hear) our other pet being named “Campagnolo.” Shimmy, Campy, it all stands to reason, yeah? Speaking, then, of brilliantly cute pups, this one is bound to make you smile, or at least wink.

Photo of the Week: Bikes ‘n Wines

I love this sign; it’s almost as if they made it especially for this site. But alas, this was taken in Argentina (at least that’s one of the tags).

Make Your Own Wine: Crushpad

In case you aren’t familiar with Crushpad, it is a company that leverages their knowledge, experience, and technology to help you make your dream come true of being a world-class winemaker.

Specialty Wine Glasses?

On opening day we wrote about Serious Eats as a site to watch for important food content. Aside from their snazzy layout, complete with comic-like balloons linking “conversations” to their “speakers,” there is an abundance of truly great topics on the webpage.

Recently a question was posed as to the effect of, shall we say, snazzy wine glasses versus the 12-pack from Target in the blue box (ahem, not that we would stoop so low, cough cough):

Does laying out the money (and bar space) for specialty wine glasses make a difference to the average wine drinker? I’m a wine novice but I’m enrolling myself in “self-taught wine appreciation 101.” Will my not-too-sophisticated palate detect any subtle difference between a nice Cabernet Sauvignon sipped from a regular wine glasses and one from a Riedel Vinum Bordeaux glass?

I love any excuse to go shopping for stemware but the next earthquake to roll through L.A. is going to produce one heck of a glistening, crunchy mess around my bar!

One commenter noted that the more pricey wine glasses allow you to fit your entire nose inside the glass. Now, I don’t know what size nose you have, but outside of the dessert-wine arena, what glasses can’t you fit your nose in?!

Seriously.

Wine Management Software: Keep Tabs on Your Collection

Wine management software can help you maintain inventory and keep track of your wine cellar. Additionally, since many databases are stored on the web, you can access your information wherever you happen to be. Oh, and you can do it without a computer, too. Treo, here we come!

Rideable Artwork, Bendable Wheels

Everyone knows shopping carts get around. None move like this one, I’m sure. This shopping cart is from Max Chen’s rideable artwork page, and you’ll have to check it out for yourself to see the steering wheel what fell off the truck and subsequently got run over by a BMW at 2:30 in the morning.

Serious Eats Encourages: type with your mouth full

Serious Eats Wine Wheels

Keep your eyes peeled fingers flexed for the arrival of a new food website today called Serious Eats. From their about page:

Serious Eats, the first website for serious eaters, consists of video, blogs, photos, and feature stories and all geared toward the foods people love. Our goal, however lofty, is to provide the best, most satisfying food- and drink-related experience on the internet.

On the list of contributors are Ed Levine, author of New York Eats, the bloggers behind Slice, Amateur Gourmet, and, well, one of the bloggers behind blogger from way back when.

While there definitely is a bit of an overload on the visual stimuli, Serious Eats looks like seriously neat a food site. It will be seriously interesting to see what they cook up.
