Bike Seat Bottle Opener

Bike Seat Bottle OpenerI love this bicycle seat bottle opener. I love how simple the design is and how inconspicuous it will look just hanging out under your bike seat. I do wish, however, that there was a way to add a corkscrew to it, too. That way, when you slapped your wine bottle onto your bike, you would be all set to open it. You know you want one.

Devicycle: Bicycle for Land, Sea, or Space?!

Devicycle: Land Sea or Space

Clocking in at just a tad uglier than the Monster Bike and perhaps far more practical: the guy behind the Whymcycle Express, and whymcycles, is my new hero. For lack of better words, here are his:

Stock fork surpassed by adding rear 2/3′s of a full suspension mountain bike as the springer front end. Double rimmed drum brake 16″ laced to 26″ alloy, get us height, braking and with plastic lawn sign in between the spokes, a dandy rudder!! Also tripled up on Torrington freewheeling axel bearings for the rear drive component. 3 of them with 6 all-thread bolts thru their sprocket teeth, making them act as one, ideally reducing by 2/3′s the strain on each one..also bolted by the 6 all-threads, a 65 tooth Schwinn Exerciser cog..dune/mud/hillclimb to test them this weekend @ the da Vinci Days Kinetic Sculpture Race in Corvallis. OR.
That fork innovation’s going onto my full suspension tallie Real soon….

Rear wheel ‘overwheels’ are 40″ trampolines for mud/sand/water paddle wheels….shall see if they survive the test weekend also….
Go to All sizes ‘original’ to see some of the details that make this function & survive.
Most of my beasts are made to work and last, and be serviceable for maintenance ..bearing work, spoke tuning, and further ‘upgrades’ . Yikes! (It Will get painted, promise.)

Monacle Bike: Bicycle Monowheel

Wait, what? Ok, anyone feel like a hamster!? With no handlebars it would appear as if you have to lean, like on a motorcycle, to steer. Sweet.

News Brief: Bicycles Banned In Blackhawk (bullshit)

Banning bicycles is bullshitWow. I can’t think of anything more stupid for the state of Colorado or the city therein than to ban bicycles. Here’s the description:

There are signs posted in several spots around town that show a bicycle with a circle around it and a line across it; however if people miss it and didn’t read the section in the local newspaper talking about Blackhawk’s new law, most would have no clue riding in spots is illegal.”Most of the business owners didn’t even know about it,” said Webb.

Bicycles Banned In Blackhawk – Denver News Story – KMGH Denver.

Take That SUVs!

While the Monsterbike may not be the best for tackling hills or going fast, it would certainly teach an important lesson to anyone who doesn’t check their mirror before opening their car door.

Big Ass 85cm Bike

bigassbikebigJust in case you were wondering, “hey, what does an 85cm bike look like?” Here’s one for ya.

Those are 700c wheels. Every time I post this photo people get upset and tell me that they must be 24″ wheels. Wrong 700C.

It is a great bike. It is 83.5 cm st and ht. I think I will try to get it and put a tiller and a kidback tandem crank on it so I can ride it. Ebay auction 330045460487.

There are some tandems and otherstuff being sold as well on ebay. Check em out here under seller name Kelly bike outlet.

Bike Helmet Air Conditioner

helmet fan on Wine and WheelsFrom the Make Flickr pool, this helmet looks great. A/C for a hot day, or fume buffering for in the city cruising. About making this helmet, “openfly” writes:

I was bored one day at NYCR and started playing with my rising collections of motors.

Ended up stuffing an 18v motor into my bike helmet and putting two 9vs in series on it. Runs awesome. Surprisingly effective as a cooling apparatus and even more surprisingly effective as a fume buffer.

Probably not very safe in an accident though =P

And while you’re checking out helmets, you should see this solar powered bike helmet, or these bike helmet ear warmers.

Inner Tube Nano Case

nano case on wine and wheelsAh this project is reminiscent of the glory days of Apple technology when the iPods would come with their own felt-type case. No need to get anything else! But, now that we’ve all realized the relative market for “protection” they come with cases no more. After you get or make a belt out of a recycled inner tube, why not cut and stitch together your very own iPod Nano case? Here’s how.

Tips for Commuting in Cold Weather

Seems like every year there is the same article about how to beat the cold on a bike. Nothing new here, but perhaps a refresher is in order. From Bicycling:

* When riding in snow (or sand) it’s a good idea to let some air out of the tires. This increases the surface area and helps tires to float rather than sink. You can find how much psi to lower to here.
* Be sure to lubricate and clean your chain more often. Here are more details on winterizing your bike.
It takes longer to stop with wet brake pads. Judge your stopping distance and prepare accordingly.
* One of my favorite cycling apparel items is my balaclava. On a 10-degree morning it keeps my face from hurting and my lungs from freezing up. Some people think it looks geeky. I prefer to think of my balaclava as intriguing, or mysterious. I’ve had friends and a coworker ask if that was me riding in to work in the snow. They thought they recognized my bike but they weren’t sure because they couldn’t see my face. (See? Mysterious.)
* A good pair of thermal tights is such a comfort. I had my first experience wearing them this winter. I was amazed at how something as thin as tights could keep me so warm. On blustery days with a wind chill factor of -2 degrees I wear wind pants over the tights and life is good.
* Keep your digits from freezing. My favorite style of gloves are the lobster or split-finger type. They can take a little getting used to, but they keep your hands warmer than full-finger gloves and are better for finger dexterity than mittens. Here’s a head to toe checklist.

Dukes of “Melburn”

fyxomatosis on wine and wheelsUm, ok, I don’t know how to say this exactly, but you’re gonna want to check these photos out. And if they make you want to honk your horn, here’s a way to rig a car horn on a bicycle.
