News Brief: Bicycles Banned In Blackhawk (bullshit)

Banning bicycles is bullshitWow. I can’t think of anything more stupid for the state of Colorado or the city therein than to ban bicycles. Here’s the description:

There are signs posted in several spots around town that show a bicycle with a circle around it and a line across it; however if people miss it and didn’t read the section in the local newspaper talking about Blackhawk’s new law, most would have no clue riding in spots is illegal.”Most of the business owners didn’t even know about it,” said Webb.

Alabama Redefines ‘Pornographic’

Cycles GladiatorA poster of a nude nymph on a bicycle, from 1895, has been deemed pornographic.

Earlier this week management at MBC United, a Birmingham-based company that distributed the wine throughout the state, was informed by the ABC that the label on Cycles Gladiator wines had been deemed pornographic, that the label hadn’t been properly approved by the board and it would now have to be removed from stores. The offending label carries a reproduction of an art poster done in 1895 by an unknown Parisian artist introducing the Cycles Gladiator bicycle. The poster depicts a nude woman with flowing red hair essentially flying through space with a bicycle.

Just thought I would share, because this is one of my all time favorite wine labels. Story here, and best comment from bama_in_hawaii:

This is soooo WRONG on soooo many levels.

The naked truth is this: Even if the label was completely blacked out, if you drink enough of the stuff, you could still start seeing naked nymphs on winged bicycles!!!

UPDATE: The Chocolate Lady blog has photoshopped red socks onto her feet to make her decent!

Wine and Chocolate Improve Brain Performance

And tea, too, but who cares about that? From the Science Daily:

Participants filled in information about their habitual food intake and underwent a battery of cognitive tests. Those who consumed chocolate, wine, or tea had significantly better mean test scores and lower prevalence of poor cognitive performance than those who did not. The team reported their findings in the Journal of Nutrition.

Just don’t over do it!

Wine Tips: How to Read a Wine Label

wsj1A good article from the Wall Street Journal food and drink section on what to look for on the wine label. The advice? Be sure the wine isn’t too old, doesn’t have too much alcohol, and stay away from what they call “critter labels.Read it here…

Pedal Power this New Year’s Eve

Times Square Happy holidays everyone! When the ball drops this year in New York City, remember that it is bicycle powered:

The ritual dropping of the ball in New York’s Times Square on New Year’s eve, seen on television by millions around the world, is becoming a bit greener than in years past.

The 2-0-0-9 sign that will light up when the New Year’s ball finishes its descent will be powered by batteries charged by people pedaling on bicycles.

Let’s hope the whole event this year will be powered by bikes (so far they’ve collected 35% of the necessary power).
